Because Magnesium is absorbed in the intestines, the health of the digestive system and kidneys affect the body’s magnesium status. Similarly, many gastrointestinal disorders such as Crohn’s disease may inhibit magnesium absorption. Magnesium works in conjunction with Calcium and a deficiency in one can result in lower levels of the other. Certain medications can affect magnesium levels as well as intestinal surgery. Older adults are more likely to be deficient in Magnesium that are younger adults.
